Our Final Second Installation!

Open Studio Success
It was a thrill to see our pearl balloons floating around on people's arms while they walked around Open Studio tonight at Alexander Hall. The surprise was we added about 150 helium inflated balloons to the ceiling of the grid, inviting viewers to walk in, explore, play, and the biggest perk getting a free balloon, the kids loved it! And if you think about it, the little ones probably don't normally have all that much that appeals specifically to them, but this evening the grids and balloons appealed to everyone!

This is an in progress installation. We are working on it for the next few days and will be posting video and pictures! The room will eventually fill up with grids, with a few walk ways to maneuver through.

4/22
Hey guys. So if someone wants to come in this afternoon I could work with them on the walls. We need at least two people to get started on it and I've already measured it all out. I'll be getting my phone back around 4 today so you can text me then.

Two days until Install!
I am definitely going on my final spurt of bowl making tomorrow. I think I have finally perfected my technique and created an assembly like work pace. I'm always more productive if I have sorted out a way to do one step all at once before I move on to the next one. I think it is one of my weird problem solving skills, how can I get this accomplished in the most efficient way possible? Here's some shots of the bowls so far. I have 47, my goal is 80 and they are a bit greener than they appear.

The Bowls are Multiplyin'
Here are some shots of the bowls I have so far, I'm interested in how they are looking layered. I think I will have a better idea of how it will turn out when I get a lot more made. I realized today that they are very Wabi Sabi, their simplistic, primitive, impermanent forms. I'm going to read the book again, and for anyone who doesn't know about the Wabi Sabi, the wikipedia entry pretty much sums it up.

idea for the first project -peach
Hi ! I think I'd like to use a corner of the room :)
the joint-twins just couldn't get out of my mind :P
I'm thinking about the door curtains, I'd like to make about 5 rows of them and have them drape down from the ceiling, each row will be consists of 5 long-thin stripes of eastern paper, with illustrations of shared organs and human eyes and maybe some scenes of the siamese twins living together.
but the stripes will be cut in different length so it forms a shape in the middle , a hollow empty shape of two people stand side by side. I'd like my viewer to stand in them, two at a time. so they can get a sense of how the con-jointed twins felt, they were always under the pressure of the public and followed by the shadow everywhere.
I'll upload a sketch later on today cause I'm not doing a good job explaining in words.
now that I think of it, it might be too rushed for april 14 :( I might do a first layer or a smaller version....and keep doing it through the quarter and make it fully rendered for the final....

Themes and Meetings
I think that we should pick our themes for the quarter. We wouldn't all have to do them at the same time, we could be working on them at different times. I think some good themes are paper and light. We should pick four. Comment on what you think and what we should do, make sure to tag posts you make based on what day it is going to be exhibited like the first one will be 4-14-10 and the theme you are working in, just so it will be easy to pull up what we've been working on so far in their categories.
Also, meetings on Friday? Times?

Paper Bowls
New idea, this is what is great about this class, I finally have ideas that I am excited about!! I want to make these paper bowls out of recycled paper I have around my house. I am shredding it and putting it on a mold to make a sheet then ripping it and putting it in a bowl mold. I would make a bunch of these and attach them to a wall (possibly with magnets). I'm not sure if I will have anything inside them, I'm kind of interested in stamping dates, I love how those stamps look but I'm not sure how I would incorporate it to make the bowls more meaningful. Thoughts, suggestions? -Malia

Owens Thomas Wall of Shame
Okay well it will have a nicer name than that, but I had this idea. I am always shocked by how many people have to take the same picture of the Owens Thomas house, it isn't that beautiful of a house or anything and yea maybe it was the first house in the USA to have indoor plumbing, and the Marquis de Lafayette did stay there like a million years ago, but I can think of a million more things in Savannah to take a picture of, rather than being the 18 pages worth of people on flickr that have the same picture I do of my trip from Savannah,GA.
Okay now idea, I want to use Flickr to create a whole wall of pictures taken of the Owens Thomas House. I would have them printed and tack them to the wall. I would also have labels under all of them with a date stamp of when the picture was taken. (the stamp being my printing part) Whatcha think?

Hello...
So our first meeting today went well. Here's the new blog! I'm hoping it will be a good place for us all to gather our thoughts and get questions and concerns addressed fast so we're all on the same page. We can also post up photos of our progress and notifications of when we'll be exhibiting our spaces. I'm really excited about all of this! Hope everyone's having a great day.
